A Seed in the Sun by Aida Salazar
Category: novel-in-verse
Age group: middle grade
Format: physical book
Summary: The book A Seed in the Sun is a historical fiction book written in verse, set in the 1960's. A young girl, Lula, working in the fields joins a protest for workers' rights with Dolores Huerta. The book follows the girl as she navigates working the farm fields and having a sick mother and a father who starts to drink more and forces his daughters to work more instead of attending school.
Justification: The reason I chose this book for the novel-in-verse category is because the cover caught my attention with the beautiful flowers and the illustrations. I was interested in the story and the fact that it is also historical fiction.
Evaluation:
The text in the book had a few Spanish words mixed in the verses. As a Spanish speaker it was easy for me to understand, but a non-Spanish speaking reader might be able to decern the meaning of the words easily.
Normally I do not enjoy reading novel-in-verse books, but this book had a good pace. The verses were also well written an example " Papa is a cactus plant who lives in the harshest conditions with a prickly shell and a desert flower who blooms only once a year". This verse is touching and made me shed a tear.
Overall the book flowed nicely and had a good pace.
