Summary: Big is a book that shows how one word can cause too much hurt to an individual. In the beginning of the book the word big was seen as something positive but as the main character grows up, she learns that being called big is no longer a good thing. There are different people in the book that tell her she is too big for certain things. She then expresses how she feels and decides she will not let things others tell her get to her.
Justification: I decided to review this book because it was a newer book. I remember seeing it more often after it won the Caldecott award. I thought the cover was interesting along with the title of the book, I was curious to see what the book was about.
Evaluation: I will be evaluating the illustrations, the layout and the plot.
The illustrations in this book were beautifully done. Soft pastel colors were used throughout the book. There were a few pages that had no words, but the story was very clear. There was so much emotion conveyed in the pages that the reader can sense what the main character was feeling.
The layout of the book was well done as the fonts used flowed nicely with the illustrations. The words were easy to follow, although some pages did have text blend in with the background, it went well with the illustrations.
The message of the book was beautifully written. I think the author shared such a wonderful message for children who may feel little by the words someone tells them. I think it also puts into perspective how others feel when they are told words that are negative. We can learn to be a bit more compassionate towards others.
I recommend this book for parents and caregivers who would like a share a story with their young children.
